  • Partners on Expanded Time

The National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL) and the Ford Foundation are working together to make expanded learning time the “new normal” for schools in our nation’s underserved communities. We seek to mobilize action among a wide variety of organizations and leaders to ensure that our students have the time they need to succeed. Read the recent New York Times op-ed by Luis Ubiñas, president of the Ford Foundation, and Chris Gabrieli, chairman of the National Center on Time & Learning, on this issue.

With over 1,000 schools already pioneering expanded learning time across the country, we know that this approach can close achievement and opportunity gaps and  allow schools to better meet  the individual needs and interests of each student. Expanding learning time also gives teachers more time for collaboration, and allows them to use data to better assess student progress and design lesson plans.  Expanding learning time is also smart prevention, keeping children off the streets and engaged during afternoon hours and connecting the community more deeply into the lives of students through partnerships with local leaders and community institutions.

The Ford Foundation has made ‘more and better’ learning time a core tenet of its education reform strategy. It is working to reinvent public schools through expanded learning time in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty, so that students are prepared equitably for college, career and civic participation.  Ford works with national, state and local partners to provide durable evidence, create powerful examples, and advocate for supportive policies. The National Center on Time & Learning is the country’s leading organization on time and learning issues. Dedicated to expanding learning time to improve student achievement and enable a well-rounded education, with a focus on children living in poverty, NCTL leverages research, public policy and technical assistance to support national, state and local initiatives that add significantly more school time for academic and enrichment opportunities to help all children meet the demands of the 21st century.

In today’s rapidly changing world, we need to prepare our students to lead and succeed in a global economy. Please explore this website to learn more about expanding learning time.  To sign up for updates on this emerging partnership, please enter your email below.
